Dojo Etiquette
Before purchasing a gi (practice uniform), please wear a loose long sleeve shirt and long “sweat” pants.
Be sure to launder your practice uniform regularly.
Please keep fingernails and toenails trimmed and do not wear any jewelry or hair ties with metal parts.
Please arrive to class early to help set up the mats.
Bowing: Bowing is a sign of respect for the dojo (our practice space), our practice partners and our sensei (teacher). It helps us to focus our attention and get ready for class. It is Japanese custom and has no religious meaning. Before class:
Set your intent for class:
If you arrive late for class bow before stepping on the mat and sit seiza at the edge of the mat until your sensei gives you permission to join the class.
When your sensei is talking or demonstrating a technique:
While you are practicing with your partner:Your partner is not your opponent. You are there to help each other not hurt each other. Be respectful and sensitive to the needs of your partner.
At the end of class:
If you need to
leave the mat during class, please politely inform your Sensei
