Bowing:

Bowing is a sign of respect for the dojo (our practice space), our practice partners and our sensei (teacher). It helps us to focus our attention and get ready for class.  It is Japanese custom and has no religious meaning.

Before class:

  • Bow in the doorway as you enter the dojo
  • Remove shoes or sandles before stepping on the mat
  • Bow at the edge of the mat before stepping on the mat

Set your intent for class:

  • Sit seiza or cross legged in best posture
  • Bow to the front when your sensei bows
  • Bow to your sensei when he/she bows to you and say, “good evening sensei”

If you arrive late for class bow before stepping on the mat and sit seiza at the edge of the mat until your sensei gives you permission to join the class.

When your sensei is talking or demonstrating a technique:

  • Sit seiza or cross legged in best posture
  • Raise your hand if you have a question
  • Bow before practicing the technique

While you are practicing with your partner:

Your partner is not your opponent.  You are there to help each other not hurt each other.  Be respectful and sensitive to the needs of your partner.

  • Higher rank is nage (person throwing) first
  • Nage offers left side first
  • Practice the technique 4 times, left, right, left, right
  • Bow to your partner after the 4 throws and switch
  • Bow and thank your partner when you have finished with technique

At the end of class:

  • Sit seiza or cross legged in best posture
  • Bow when your sensei bows
  • Bow to your sensei when he/she bows to you and say, “Thank you sensei”
  • Remain in sezia until your sensei walks to the corner of the mat and bows
  • Bow to the rest of your practice partners and thank each other
  • Bow at the edge of the mat before stepping off
  • Bow in the doorway before leaving the dojo

If you need to leave the mat during class, please politely inform your Sensei
